The Art & Integrity of Our Glasses

Twelve stages, hand finished.

Every Loculia frame begins with a quiet question. How do we make something that feels considered in the hand, and disappears on the face? The answer is not in a slogan. It is in the work, and in the people who do it.

From the moment a sheet of acetate is selected, through to the final inspection, every pair passes through twelve stages and is hand finished. Nothing is rushed. The frame you put on was cut, polished, tuned and signed off with skilled hands at the finishing stages.

Acetate is a slow material. It rewards patience and exposes anyone who tries to hurry it. That is why we choose to work this way. A frame made well takes time, and time is what gives it the weight, the depth and the quiet confidence you can feel the moment you pick it up.

What follows is the full sequence, in order, exactly as a pair of Loculia frames is built.

01

Acetate Selection

Every frame begins with a block of custom sourced cellulose acetate. Sheets are chosen by hand for clarity, depth of colour and the way the grain runs through them. Acetate that does not meet the standard is set aside, not used. A frame can only ever be as good as the material it is cut from, so this is where the care begins.

02

Templating

Each front is traced from a single master pattern. The template sets the geometry that defines how a frame sits, how it balances on the bridge, and how it reads across the face. Once a template is approved, every pair in that style is held to the same line, the same proportion and the same fit.

03

Milling the Front

The front is cut from the raw block on a slow, precise mill. We work to tight tolerances at this stage because every fraction of a millimetre carries through to the finished frame. The result is a clean, true front with crisp edges that will hold their shape long after the polishing is done.

04

Cutting the Temples

The arms are cut from the same sheet of acetate as the front, so the grain runs continuously from temple to temple. Nothing is mixed and nothing is matched after the fact. When you hold the frame up to the light, the pattern flows through it as one piece.

05

Setting the Hinges

Steel hinges are heat pressed by hand into the acetate. The bond is mechanical, with no glue and no shortcut. Done well, the hinge feels like part of the frame rather than something added to it, and it stays that way after years of opening and closing.

06

Tumbling

The frames spend days inside slow rotating drums filled with wood chips and polishing compound. Every edge is softened gradually, the way time would do it. This is the step that gives a frame the rounded, lived in feel you notice the first time you pick it up.

07

Hand Polishing

Each frame is then buffed by hand on cotton wheels. This is the moment the acetate comes alive. The surface turns from matte to a deep, almost wet shine that no machine finish can replicate. It is slow, careful work, and it is what gives the frame its presence.

08

Shaping the Front

The front is gently warmed and curved to sit true on the face. Pantoscopic tilt, face form and bridge fit are all set in this step. Get this right and the frame disappears on the face. Get it wrong and you feel it all day. This is craftsmanship, not assembly.

09

Core Wire

A length of steel is set into the spine of each temple. It gives the arms memory and strength, and it is what allows them to be adjusted to fit and stay that way. The wire is invisible from the outside, but it is the reason the frame holds its shape over time.

10

Lenses

Anti blue light lenses are cut and seated into the frame. We test the tension carefully so nothing flexes, rattles or shifts. The lenses are tuned to filter the wavelengths that strain the eye during long hours on a screen, without distorting how the world actually looks.

11

Assembly

Every part is aligned, tensioned and tightened by hand. Hinges are tuned for a smooth open and a confident close. Temples are levelled. Nothing leaves this stage until the frame moves the way it should, which is to say, like it was made for one person and one pair of hands.

12

Inspection

Each pair is checked, cleaned and signed off before it leaves the bench. We look at the joinery, the polish, the geometry and the feel in the hand. If anything is off, it goes back. If it is right, it is packed and sent. There is no in between.

Function before noise.

We do not chase trend, season or spectacle. Loculia exists to make quiet, considered eyewear that holds its shape, its weight and its meaning long after the noise has moved on. Hand finished, one pair at a time, built to be lived in.
